Uganda

The Republic of Uganda is located in east-central Africa, situated north and northwest of Lake Victoria. It is a landlocked country bordered by Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda on the southeast and Zaire to the northwest. The greater part of Uganda consists of a plateau at an average height of 1200 meters. Along the western border are the Ruwenzori Mountains reaching heights in excess of 4900 meters, while on the eastern frontier Mount Elgon rises to over 4250 meters. By contrast, the Western Rift Valley, which runs from north to south through the western half of the country, is as low as 900 meters. Uganda is the source of many rivers the most famous being The White Nile which has its source at Lake Victoria.

Uganda is a land of many contrasts, with its forbidding mountains acting as a foil to the softer meadows and broad savannah, while the dry uplands contrast with the swamplands of the lake shores. It is a country saturated in colour, the outstanding natural beauty of its people and the landscapes have always stirred the imagination of travelers. The country has been developed by the unification of its ancient kingdoms, as well as many independent chieftances, which are now part of this modern state. The country is at last, after years of turmoil where progress came to a halt, now enjoying the fruits of international attention and investment. Despite this progress, the heritage lives on in the hearts of its people, their traditional dress, languages, dances and customs. Tourism has steadily grown, and is now attracting investment and interest worldwide. Great steps have been made in the infrastructure of National Parks. New areas of interest have been developed such as Mountain tourism and importantly ecotourism. Other growing areas include white water rafting and sport fishing, which are back on many itineraries. Good standard of hotels, wonderful choice of National Parks, transportation and the friendliness of its people, make this a must for the discerning Afrian tourist.
